Kundli Matching for Marriage: A Beginner's Guide

Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, is a traditional Vedic astrology method many Hindu families use before finalizing a marriage. It compares the birth charts of both partners across eight categories (Ashtakoot), for a maximum of 36 points.

The eight factors (Ashtakoot)

Varna (spiritual compatibility) — 1 point.

Vashya (mutual control/dominance) — 2 points.

Tara (health and well-being) — 3 points.

Yoni (physical/mental compatibility) — 4 points.

Graha Maitri (mental compatibility) — 5 points.

Gana (temperament) — 6 points.

Bhakoot (family welfare and prosperity) — 7 points.

Nadi (health of future children) — 8 points.

What score is considered good?

18+ out of 36 is generally considered acceptable, 24+ is considered good, and above 32 is considered excellent — but different families and priests weigh this differently, and Nadi/Bhakoot dosha are often given extra importance.

Manglik status (Mars placement) is checked separately and matters a lot to many families — if both partners are Manglik, it is traditionally considered neutralized.
